This sparked a crisis between Ankara and Moscow, bringing the two countries to the brink of military confrontation. Eventually, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan apologized for the incident and vowed to investigate the attack. The two leaders subsequently normalized their ties.

HIV/Aids: China reports 14% surge in new cases
China has announced a 14% jump in the number of its citizens who are living with HIV and Aids. More than 820,000 people are affected in the country, health officials say. About 40,000 new cases were reported in the second quarter of 2018 alone. The vast majority of new cases were transmitted through sex, marking a change from the past.
Basra protests: US closes consulate after weeks of deadly protests
The US has said it will close its consulate in the southern Iraqi city of Basra, blaming increasing threats from Iran and Iranian-backed forces. In a statement, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said all but emergency staff would be relocated to Baghdad. He repeated earlier warnings that the US would hold Iran responsible for any harm to its citizens or facilities.

A woman has been sentenced in Egypt to two years in prison for allegedly spreading fake news after she posted a video on Facebook decrying her experience of sexual harassment in the country. The sentencing of actress Amal Fathy comes as Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi has given free rein to the country’s police and judiciary to clamp down on women who complain of sexual assault and harassment and women’s activist groups.

A delegation of senior Hamas officials left the Gaza Strip on Saturday for a round of talks with Egyptian intelligence in Cairo, in order to save the possibility of reaching an agreement on intra-Palestinian reconciliation and a long-term ceasefire arrangement with Israel. The Gaza delegation is headed by Khalil al-Hayya—the organization’s deputy leader in Gaza. The Hamas leadership during talks will be represented by Saleh al-Arouri.
