Sovereignty and Sacrifice Wednesday, August 31 | 2 Samuel 24:1–25 Today’s reading concludes 2 Samuel. In this remarkable book, we’ve witnessed the rise of David, his devastating fall, his restoration to God, and the consequences of his sin. This final chapter emphasizes two themes in this book, while also providing hope for the future. First, we are reminded that God is sovereign. God is the One who chose David, empowered him, and directed his steps. God’s sovereign rule is seen in the first verse of this chapter: “And he incited David against them” (v. 1). On one level, this may be confusing. How could God hold David accountable for sin that He incited him to do? Scripture affirms both God’s sovereignty and our own human responsibility and freedom. It does not fully explain how these two aspects of reality ultimately cohere, but we can be certain that both are true. Human freedom can never thwart God’s plans. David's Final Words Tuesday, August 30 | 2 Samuel 23:1–39 A person’s final words carry special significance. Often people record the last words of famous individuals. Sometimes these are humorous. Theoretical physicist Richard Feynman is reported to have said, “I’d hate to die twice. It’s so boring.” Sometimes they are sublime. As Beethoven was breathing his last, he declared, “I will hear in heaven.” Today’s reading records David’s last words (v. 1). They are not the last words of David in Scripture. We’ll read his words later in the book, but the narrator intentionally included his final statement here. Next to the joyous knowledge of the new creation was a clear-eyed understanding of the reality of suffering in the world.
