Start at Home Mother Teresa Peace and war start within one’s own home. If we really want peace for the world, let us start by loving one another within our families. Sometimes it is hard for us to smile at one another. It is often difficult for the husband to smile at his wife or for the wife to smile at her husband. In order for love to be genuine, it has to be above all, a love for our neighbor. We must love those who are nearest to us, in our own family. From there, love spreads toward whoever may need us. It is easy to love those who live far away. It is not always easy to love those who live right next to us. It is easier to offer a dish of rice to meet the hunger of a needy person than to comfort the loneliness and the anguish of someone in our own home who does not feel loved. Source: No Greater Love

Daily Prayer for May 31 Christoph Friedrich Blumhardt As for you, see that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father. And this is what he promised us – eternal life. 1 John 2:24–25, NIV Lord our God, we want to find our joy in you and in all your promises to us. For you have promised that in the midst of all the pain and sorrow, you are preparing what pleases you and serves your honor in every heart. May we experience in our lives the fulfillment of many of your promises, so that again and again we can go forward joyfully, rising above difficult times and situations. Have mercy on us and protect us in your strength. Amen.

Hallelujah! Tuesday, May 31 | Psalm 150 On the Go? Listen to Today's Devotional My family has a tradition at dinner time. We normally sing the Doxology as a prayer before we eat, “Praise God from whom all blessings flow.” This is a special and appropriate way to end each day, praising God and reminding each other of how He provides for us. In a similar way, the Book of Psalms ends with a rousing call to praise. In Psalm 150, the Psalmist commands the congregation to “Praise the Lord” twelve times! Normally, praise psalms not only call people to praise God but also provide reasons to do so. Psalm 150 is unusual in this regard. It does not give any reasons to praise God. Perhaps this is because in the concluding psalm, the Psalmist knows that reasons galore have already been provided throughout the Psalter. We have come a long way since our journey through the Psalter began. We know that life is not always easy. There have been many laments in this book which describe the problem

The Reality of God’s Love No matter what our circumstances might suggest, God still loves us and will never stop. May 31, 2022 2 Corinthians 11:23-27 Have you ever wondered why a God of love lets bad things happen to you? Or whether your past keeps Him from loving you? But just because you may feel unloved doesn’t mean that you actually are. The apostle Paul could probably relate. In today’s reading we see that he encountered hardship after hardship while following God. And his past was so checkered with sin (Acts 8:1-3; Acts 9:1-2) that he could have assumed he had good reason to feel unloved. Yet Paul kept spreading his message of hope—that God loves us and sent His Son to die for our sins. The situation we find ourselves in may be unfair, painful, or humiliating, but it doesn’t mean God has stopped loving us. Sometimes we face difficulty because He is smoothing our rough edges and molding us into His image. Other trials are instigated by Satan but are allowed through the Lord’s p

Why Do They Join? Scott Beauchamp No one joins the military just for money or solely out of love of family. It’s too profound and uniquely complex a sacrifice for that. And when a young person tells you he enlisted for adventure, what he really means is that he went on a quest for meaning – our popular vocabulary being too anemic to support the weight of a desire simultaneously so necessary and recondite. And there are a lot of reasons why people join up. Some are unutterable. And of those that we can express, many contradict each other.

Daily Prayer for May 30 Christoph Friedrich Blumhardt Praise the Lord, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits. He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases. Psalm 103:1–3, NIV Lord our God, O Holy One, we thank you that we may lay aside our own nature and be lifted in spirit above all that is temporal and human and have joy in you. In spite of all the evil surrounding us, in spite of the thousandfold misery of humankind, we may still rejoice in you, in all you do and will yet do for us. Grant that we may go on rejoicing, having joy together, helping instead of burdening each other, until this earth is filled with the jubilation of those you have so richly blest. Forgive us all our sins. Heal us in mind and body. Deliver us from all the corruption that tries to take hold of our souls. Amen.

Praise the Lord! Monday, May 30 | Psalm 148 On the Go? Listen to Today's Devotional In his book Reflections on the Psalms, C. S. Lewis describes why people so naturally praise: “I think we delight to praise what we enjoy because the praise not merely expresses but completes the enjoyment...it is frustrating to have discovered a new author and not be able to tell anyone how good he is...the delight is incomplete till it is expressed.” In today’s reading, the Psalmist is delighted in God and wants everyone to join in the praise. He is not content until the entire universe directs its reverence to God. Twelve times in this poem, the Psalmist commands different groups of people or parts of the created world to “praise!” In verses 1–4, the Psalmist looks up and commands the “heavens... heights... angels... heavenly hosts... sun... moon... and stars” to praise the Lord. They should delight to praise God because He created them and sustains them (vv. 5–6). The only appropriate response

Unstoppable Love God's love for us never ends, but we must open our hearts to receive it. May 30, 2022 Romans 8:31-39 God is love. It is His very nature to care for His creation unconditionally. This means that no matter what we do, the Lord will not stop loving us. After reading that sentence, many people are going to think of a dozen reasons why they are an exception. So let me make this clear: God loves each of us, and the only thing preventing us from experiencing that love is our own hesitation to accept it. The truth is, none of us deserve the Lord’s love, and yet He freely gives it anyway. Some people intellectually believe every word of the Bible but still feel unloved because they judge themselves unworthy. Their doubt acts like a dam, keeping the flow of God’s care from their heart—and the barrier will hold as long as the person believes divine love must be earned. Romans 8:32 tells the good news that “God is for us,” and the cross is a stunning example: Jesus died

When We Seek J. Heinrich Arnold Faith cannot be acquired by a decision of the will: it is a gift from God. Yet it can be given to everyone who seeks it. As Jesus says, “Seek, and ye shall find.” What counts here is trust. Faith is not dependent on reason – on theories, theological systems, or other intellectual explanations. It is belief, precisely in the absence of these things. Mary had reason enough to doubt the angel who came to her from God, but instead she believed – “Here am I, a handmaiden of the Lord” – and received the Word in her heart. It can be that simple! Daily Prayer for May 29 Christoph Friedrich Blumhardt But God’s mercy is so abundant, and his love for us is so great, that while we were spiritually dead in our disobedience he brought us to life with Christ. It is by God’s grace that you have been saved. In our union with Christ Jesus he raised us up with him to rule with him in the heavenly world. Ephesians 2:4–6, TEV Lord our God, we thank you for allowing us to experience your power. We thank you that we need not be occupied with material things only. We thank you that your Spirit comes to our aid again and again. Grant that we may continue to have your help, and let many hearts find what a grace it is that in spirit we may walk in heaven even during this transitory life with all its foolish ways. We may say with complete assurance that everything tormenting and burdening will pass by. It passes by, and we go joyfully and confidently toward your kingdom, which continually gains in power. Amen.

Grateful Praise Sunday, May 29 | Psalm 147 On the Go? Listen to Today's Devotional Almost 600 years before Jesus was born, the Babylonian army stormed Jerusalem, destroyed the city and Temple, and carried off most of the population into exile. By historical standards, this should have been the end of Israel as a nation. In the ancient world, most people believed that if your nation was defeated in battle, so were its gods. It would have been easy for Israel to lose faith. But a generation or two later, the unthinkable happened. They were allowed to return to their land and rebuild their city and Temple. Today’s reading is a praise psalm that gives thanks to God for this miraculous restoration. The Psalmist declares, “The LORD builds up Jerusalem; he gathers the exiles of Israel” (v. 2). Israel’s restoration clearly demonstrated the power of God. God’s power is also seen in creation. When you look at the night sky, it is easy to be overwhelmed by the size of the universe and the n

Sunday Reflection: Wonderfully Made God designed you unlike anyone else, and your role in His kingdom is just as unique. May 29, 2022 To get the most out of this devotion, set aside time to read the scriptures referenced throughout. Have you ever considered that fingerprints are an amazing example of how much God cares for us? Each of us is born with a certain arrangement of arches, loops, and whorls on our hands, and they don’t change as we grow or age. They are also exclusive. Think about that for a moment: Out of roughly eight billion people on earth, no two of us have the same fingerprint. We’ve each been uniquely created by God. What’s more, He has a singular plan for every life (Jer. 1:5; Prov. 16:3-4; Prov. 16:9). There is no such thing as a non-valuable person in God’s eyes—He loves every single one of us equally and is personally involved in seeing His plans for our lives come to fulfillment. In fact, it brings Him joy to do so! So instead of comparing yourself to others or

12-5-22 The Trinity: Examining the Triune God

The Trinity: Examining the Triune God :: By Mark A. Becker Published on: May 28, 2022 by RRadmin7 Category:General Articles Introduction We are about to embark on a rather exiting journey in Examining the Triune God. Commonly known as The Trinity, God has revealed Himself as One God, yet with three distinct persons inhabiting the whole. Though impossible for finite man to entirely grasp, the concept is clearly laid out in the Holy Scriptures and is evident throughout. Within this journey, we are going to offer several practical and human-related analogies that, although not perfect, will prayerfully help us to better understand our amazing God, His triune attributes in relation to His Godhead, and the character, roles, and mission of each. We will also look at a few hard-to-understand passages and offer some interpretations that, hopefully, will make sense in light of what we do know about our loving triune God. The Trinity First, we’d like to begin with observing the Trinity as f
