Report: Syrian air defense intercepts Israeli missile strike on airport 
Syrian state media said a military airport near Homs had come under missile attack which was repelled by its air defense systems on Thursday. “One of our military airports in the central region was exposed to hostile missile aggression, and our air defense systems confronted the attack and prevented it from achieving its aim,” state news agency SANA said.
The ‘Gaza Spring’? Palestinian man sets himself on fire 
A young man in the Gaza Strip committed an act of self-immolation, pouring gasoline over his body and setting himself on fire, in protest of what many Palestinians view as a hopeless situation…Harb was a Gaza-based employee of the Palestinian Authority whose salary had been withheld for several months. Local reports said he cursed the Palestinian government as onlookers rushed to put out the flames engulfing him.
MH17: Russia ‘liable’ for downing airliner over Ukraine
Australia and the Netherlands have formally accused Russia of being responsible for downing a Malaysia Airlines passenger jet in 2014. All 298 people on board MH17, which was en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, died when it was shot down over rebel-held territory in Ukraine. On Thursday, Dutch-led international investigators concluded that the missile belonged to a Russian brigade.
Irish abortion referendum voting opens
Polls are open in the referendum on the Republic of Ireland’s abortion laws. The vote will decide whether to repeal a part of the constitution, known as the Eighth Amendment, which effectively bans terminations in the country. Currently, abortion is only allowed when a woman’s life is at risk, but not in cases of rape, incest or fatal foetal abnormality.

North Korea has said it is still willing to talk “at any time in any form” after US President Donald Trump abruptly cancelled his meeting with Kim Jong-un. Vice-foreign minister Kim Kye-gwan said Mr Trump’s decision was “extremely regrettable”. President Trump blamed the North’s “open hostility” for the cancellation.

Mortgage rates have been rising at a pace not seen in almost 50 years
Mortgage rates continued their upward march this week, extending the most prolonged increase in rates in 46 years. According to the latest data released Thursday by Freddie Mac, the 30-year fixed-rate average climbed to 4.66 percent with an average 0.4 point. (Points are fees paid to a lender equal to 1 percent of the loan amount.) It was 4.61 percent a week ago and 3.95 percent a year ago.

Various NFL players are reportedly discussing different forms of protesting in response to a new policy requiring players to stand for the national anthem. “I talked to a former NFL player yesterday who has said that players are already talking about other ways in which they can protest,” NBC’s Craig Melvin said on “Today” on Thursday.
