Lombok earthquake: 14 killed on Indonesian tourist island
Fourteen people have died after a 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck the popular tourist island of Lombok in Indonesia Sunday, damaging more than 1,000 homes and sending residents fleeing for safety. The earthquake hit early in the morning, at about 5.45 a.m. local time (6:45 p.m. Saturday ET), the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said, at a shallow depth of just 7.5 kilometers (4.6 miles).

Lombok earthquake: Hikers trapped on mountain after landslides
More than 200 hikers are trapped on a mountain on the Indonesian tourist island of Lombok, after a deadly earthquake triggered landslides which cut off escape routes. Hundreds of rescue workers are now working to evacuate them from Mount Rinjani, a popular hiking destination. The 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck early on Sunday not far from the base of the mountain.

Iran’s currency hit a record low on Sunday of 100,000 rials to the dollar amid a deepening economic crisis and the imminent return of full US sanctions. The unofficial rate stood at 102,000 rials by midday, according to Bonbast, one of the most reliable sites for tracking the Iranian currency. The rate was confirmed by a trader who spoke on condition of anonymity to AFP.

Israel’s military says it has intercepted a ship carrying activists en route to Gaza aiming to violate the legal naval blockade on the coastal territory. The IDF Spokesperson’s Unit said the ship had been monitored and was detained according to the international law. “The IDF forces clarified to the activists on the ship that they are violating the legal naval blockade and that any humanitarian equipment can be transferred to Gaza through Ashdod Port,” the statement read.
