Is God On Facebook and My Friend? :: By Clay Smith
Well, I don’t know about Facebook or any other social media platform, but I do know He is our friend. There are scriptures in the Bible that show this. I’ll get to the Facebook part in a minute.
Here is a scripture from the book of John:
“Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I commanded you. Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you” (John 15:14-15).
There is an old hymn that is sung called “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.” That’s a classic; it’s also uplifting and comforting, but we don’t hear hymns like this much anymore, do we? Jesus is our personal friend and comforter when we trust and lean on Him.
I chose this title because I decided to watch a couple of episodes (reruns) of the new fall season television series called God Friended Me. I didn’t watch it when it aired because I was skeptical of any “primetime” show coming out that had God in it, especially the title. The previews looked to be possibly true to how God should be portrayed biblically in any format like television.
God has decided to use the Facebook media platform to accomplish his Divine directions for people that need help, and using this medium seems to be legit. Well, the first two shows were really good until the start of the third episode. That’s when things “went south” for me and I turned it off. Man, I was really enjoying it until then! Of course the devil had to come in and turn something that was going to be a wholesome family show into rubbish. Remember Lucifer? That’s one example.
It’s not my intention to offend anyone who likes this show. I’m not trying to be a “holy roller” or something; I’m just disappointed that Hollywood can’t come out with one clean family show like there used to be that includes God in it. I was really hoping this would be different. I can’t speak for the family sitcoms that are on because that’s not the style of programming I like. But that’s the age we live in today.
But God and Friend is my main emphasis here; not entertainment.
God “friends” us when we turn to Him, and a relationship begins biblically. He draws us to Himself. The Lord desires this because He made us, and not ourselves. He lives in us through His Holy Spirit which He promised the Apostles before He left to heaven, where He is now (Acts 1:5). God can use Facebook or any social media He wants to use to accomplish His perfect will, and He probably does in His own Divine way. He can do anything; He’s God.
We learn and hear from God primarily from reading His Word and listening to the Holy Spirit once we become a child of His. Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life. He is the only true Saviour. He is the only “begotten Son” of the Father. Jesus is our Lord, our heavenly Father (friend) that sticks with us “closer than a brother.” Our earthly friends will let us down because we as humans are not perfect. We sin and make mistakes because we are not perfect. Jesus is and always was; therefore, he never lets us down.
He chastises and corrects us quite often because we tend to gravitate away from His will unto our own. When we mess up and sin, and choose our way, He forgives us and brings us back. We stray like lost sheep. That’s what sheep do. That’s why they need a shepherd. We always want to walk with Jesus and stay close to the One who saves our soul from eternal death.
Do you know Jesus as your friend and Savior like we believers in Christ do?
If you’re not sure or have questions, drop me an email and we can chat. You can have a heavenly eternal relationship with Christ now if you seek him. That’s a true friendship that lasts forever. It will never fade away.
In His Name,
Clay Smith
