In the latest striking example of how the Democratic Party resorts to cronyism (and perhaps corruption) to ensure that its favored candidates beat back progressive challengers in local races, a candidate for Colorado’s 6th Congressional District has leaked a recording of a conversation with Minority Leader Steny Hoyer to The Intercept which published it overnight. In it, Hoyer can be heard essentially lecturing the candidate about why he should step aside and let the Democratic Party bosses – who of course have a better idea about which candidate will prevail over a popular Republican in the general election – continue pulling the strings.
UC Berkeley can’t block lawsuit alleging censorship of conservatives, judge rules
UC Berkeley has become the epicenter of ongoing free speech wars in the U.S. It canceled several appearances by conservative speakers amid the violence of black-clad Antifa activists. In February 2017, a speech by Milo Yiannopoulos was canceled after violent far-left activists started a riot in opposition to his presence. The uproar over the cancelation prompted President Donald Trump to threaten to pull federal funding from the school if it “does not allow free speech and practices violence on innocent people with a different point of view.”

IAF attacks 6 Gaza targets after Palestinian attempt to breach border fence
The Israeli Air Force attacked six terror targets belonging to the Hamas naval force in the Gaza Strip late Friday night after a large-scale attempt by Palestinian rioters to breach the border fence and enter Israel earlier in the day. According to Palestinian reports, IAF aircraft launched missiles at two boats at the Gaza port, as well as a Hamas post in Deir al-Balah, south of the port.
Myanmar violence: Thousands flee fresh fighting in Kachin state
Thousands of people have fled renewed fighting between the army and ethnic Kachin rebels in Myanmar’s northernmost state. Some 4,000 people have been driven from their homes since early April, according to the UN. It comes as a longstanding conflict between the Kachin Independence Organisation (KIO) and government troops escalates.
EU member states support near-total neonicotinoids ban
Member states have voted in favour of an almost complete ban on the use of neonicotinoid insecticides across the EU. Scientific studies have long linked their use to the decline of honeybees, wild bees and other pollinators. The move represents a major extension of existing restrictions, in place since 2013.
US flies bombers over South China Sea
US Air Force B-52 Stratofortress bombers flew a training mission over the South China Sea on Tuesday, according to the US military.
The bombers took off from Andersen Air Force Base on the island of Guam according to a statement from US Pacific Air Forces, which oversees air operations in the region. The flight also involved additional training with F-15 Strike Eagle jets in the vicinity of Okinawa, Japan.
Romaine lettuce outbreak update: 98 people sick in 22 states
A nasty strain of bacteria that can cause severe illness is what’s driving a food poisoning outbreak linked to romaine lettuce, health officials said Friday. The government now has reports of 98 people who got sick in 22 states. Forty-six people have been hospitalized, including 10 with kidney failure, which is an unusually high number of hospitalizations.
Saudi Arabia downs Yemeni rebel missile
Saudi Arabia said its air defences on Friday intercepted a missile fired by Yemeni rebels, days after the insurgents’ second-in-command was killed in an air raid by Riyadh and its allies. The ballistic missile, the latest in a series of similar attacks, was headed towards the kingdom’s southern coastal city of Jizan, the official state news agency said. No casualties were reported.
U.S. appeals court allows Texas to implement voter ID law
In a 2-1 decision, a panel from the New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the law, which was designed as a fix for previous voter ID legislation struck down for being discriminatory. The panel said the new legislation enacted last year had “improvements for disadvantaged minority voters,” the latest chapter in a seven-year dispute over voter ID at the ballot box in Texas, the most-populous Republican-controlled state.
