Holy Ignorance James C. Howell The gift of the Beatitudes is kin to another curious thought from Jesus: “Do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing” (Matt. 6:3). How much more wonderful is it to be drawn in, almost when we weren’t looking? A promise was uttered, and in response to our good fortune we simply nodded spontaneously. If I begin to be poor in spirit or meek, if I hunger and thirst for righteousness or become more pure in heart, I am startled, and can think of nothing to say but “It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me” (Gal. 2:20).
